This is a question which I come across thousands of times over several student interactions! And the answer is not so straight forward.
Well it depends on the background of the students. You learn 70% of your subject in BSc and only about 20-30% in MSc.
So your background largely depends on your study during BSc.
A coaching- whether a formal or informal is necessary for almost 95% of the students! Now who took a rigorous coaching during their BSc (for eg. me) doesn’t need any dedicated coaching for any competitive exams like: JAM, NET or even GATE.
But again it depends solely whether they have learned the subject deeply during BSc or not!
For these students, who have mastered their subject during their BSc what is most important is just to be focused and keep practising questions of concerned exams. Or largely what they can do is to take some mock-tests to improve their time management and problem solving skills.
Now if we talk about the students who never read books, largely relied on notes provided by coaching centres and just studied for their college exams, the situation is completely different. These are the students who needs to clear their concepts first and for that coaching is a way out but they also need to read books. Now it is not like that they can’t qualify the exam without reading books, but it becomes much easier and productive if they do so.
Also the guidance which is provided by coaching centres helps largely to improve your rank, because they professionally work on your study and provide you the environment to get a good rank. So of course taking a coaching can boost your rank.
But it’s a mutual thing, only coaching can’t help you to achieve your goal, you need to put your effort equally.
Lastly what I will tell you is that you can crack any exam without coaching if you try to give your 100% effort and keep yourself focused. But we can’t always keep ourselves disciplined and focused and here these professional coaching play a very important role to keep us on track. Of course now a days knowledge is not difficult to get and credit goes to online platforms specially YouTube! But professional coaching can make you systematic and disciplined which Youtube can’t !
So finally what I will suggest you is to take a coaching if you can afford it in terms of money as well as time! Because time is also a crucial element of your life which is equally or even more valuable than money, still we don’t care about it!
And if you can’t afford a coaching no need to worry. Only what you have to do is to make yourself a little more productive, more focused and disciplined.
And whether you are taking a coaching or not you have to do self study, you have to read books! These have no replacement!
Hope this get your answer. Best of luck!
